Nuevo León Autonomous University student takes part in a project to develop advanced high-strength steel together with Ternium for the automobile industry.
Academia and industry perfectly combine together as they merge theory and practice for the generation of new knowledge. The strategic alliances of Ternium with different educational institutions in Mexico and around the world are proof of this.
An example is the research towards developing advanced high-strength steel for the automobile industry, nowadays produced by Claudia Ramón, who is about to finish the PhD in Materials Engineering in the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering School of UANL, and sits on Ternium chair.
Under the supervision of Omar García, Product Technologist, the young woman designed a tool that simulates the hot stamping process which this new product is focused on, representing a big progress towards its realization.
“I’m involved in this from the design, the processing and to the final tests, then I think it is something very complex,” remarks Claudia, who thanks the opening of the company for the researchers.
This piece was manufactured in Centro de Ingeniería y Desarrollo Industrial – CIDESI (Center of Engineering and Industrial Development) of Parque de Investigación e Innovación Tecnológica – PIIT (Research and Innovation Technology Park). Ternium sponsors the project which results in a positive effect not only for the industry but also for academia, points out García.
With regard to research and development, several years ago the company found an ideal component in the universities since they are an open link.
Besides students at graduate and postgraduate level, from different universities in the country and abroad, Ternium develops more complex long term projects like this one (the development of advanced high-strength steel for the automobile market) with postgraduate students.
“In this case in particular, the topic emerges as an idea by Ternium in order to increase the portfolio of products and the University answered with a proposal, which eventually materialized in Claudia’s project,” he says.
Nowadays, there are postgraduate students in UANL and others abroad, who are developing their study projects thanks to Ternium.
